A Dutch-French, Scottish Fiddle player? … Happy Canada Day!

Nothing says Happy Canada Day more than a Dutch-French next generation Glengarrian playing the Scottish fiddle.

Tradition: Old Fiddle New Blood (Ian MacLeod & Heather Flipsen, featuring the Flipsen family)

Ian MacLeod of the MacLeod Fiddlers has taught many the music of his Scottish ancestors and one of his protégées, Heather Flipsen is a shining example of the evolution of those traditions carrying on in the region.

Heather Flipsen a twenty year old fiddle phenom may have Dutch-French ancestry in her blood, but her heart beats to the sounds of Glengarry and nothing says Glengarry more than the sounds of the Scottish Fiddle.

Brought over by the early Scottish settlers to the region and quickly picked up by those who followed.  From the French who came to help cut down the timber, to the Dutch who in the post war years came to help farm the land. Present day Glengarry, although still filled with many Mc’s and Mac’s,  is like every other part of Canada, a region filled full of different cultures, beliefs and ways of life.   There is only one clan that matters these days and that is of the clan Glengarry.

The evolution of the music in the region may now have different blood continuing them on, but the tunes that have the kept feet tapping and knees bopping for over 300 years and was once considered the sounds of Scotland, is merely known these days as the music of Glengarry, Ontario, Canada.

Heather also plays with the bands Whiskey On Tap , Stewart’s Glen, Good Time Charlie, Paddy Kelly as well as playing with ‘the band’ in the area , The Brigadoons.

You can catch Heather Flipsen , The MacLeod Fiddlers and the Brigadoons at the Glengarry Highland Games in Maxville, Ontario, Canada July 29 & 30th, 2022. Happy Highland Games!
