TRADITION: trivia... Scotland had a colony in Canada?

Did you know, The Kingdom of Scotland established one of the earliest colonies in Canada in 1621...

Scotland colonies in Canada?
Sir William Alexander was granted a charter for Nova Scotia. Alexander established small settlements on Cape Breton Island and at the Bay of Fundy, but they did not flourish, and Scottish claims were surrendered to France in 1632.

In 1621, King James I appointed William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling, mayor of a vast territory which encompassed present day Nova Scotia (New Scotland), New Brunswick, and parts of the northern United States.

He briefly established a Scottish settlement at Port Royal, Nova Scotia, led by his son William Alexander (the younger). However the effort cost him most of his fortune, and when the region—now Canada's three Maritime Provinces and the state of Maine—was returned to France in 1632, it was lost.

Alexander's settlement provided the basis for Scottish claims to Nova Scotia, and provided the Coat of arms of Nova Scotia and which are still in use today.
